Nick’s Tips for Rising Seniors: Getting Ahead of College Applications

Summer before senior year is a pivotal time for college-bound students. While it’s tempting to savor the break, using these months strategically can reduce stress during the fall and set you up for success in the application process. Here are key ways rising seniors can get ahead:

Finalize Your College List

Spend time researching colleges and refining your list into a balanced mix of reach, target, and likely schools. Consider factors such as location, size, academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, and campus culture. Visiting campuses or taking virtual tours can help clarify which schools feel like the right fit.

Begin Your Personal Statement

The Common App personal statement is one of the most important pieces of your application. Summer is the perfect time to brainstorm, draft, and revise without the added pressure of schoolwork. Start with free-writing exercises to capture authentic stories and gradually shape them into a polished essay.

Get a Head Start on Supplemental Essays

Many colleges release supplemental essay prompts over the summer. Even if they aren’t available yet, you can prepare by reflecting on experiences, values, and goals you might highlight. Once prompts are released, you’ll be ready to draft quickly.

Organize Your Resume and Activities List

Applications often include space to showcase extracurricular activities, leadership roles, community service, and work experiences. Summer is an ideal time to gather details, refine descriptions, and highlight impact and growth. Having this list prepared makes the fall application process smoother.

Strengthen Your Application Profile

If you have time, pursue meaningful summer activities, whether that’s a job, internship, service project, or passion project. Admissions officers value initiative, responsibility, and curiosity. Even small projects, if pursued authentically, can demonstrate your drive.

Prepare for Standardized Testing (If Applicable)

If you plan to take the SAT or ACT in early fall, use summer for focused preparation. Consistent practice can improve confidence and performance without the distraction of a busy school schedule.

Plan Recommendation Requests

Think about which teachers, mentors, or coaches you’d like to ask for recommendation letters. Use the summer to reflect on why you’re asking each person and what qualities they can highlight. When school resumes, you’ll be ready to make thoughtful requests.

Set a Timeline

Map out your application deadlines for early action, early decision, and regular decision. Create a calendar that includes time for essay drafting, editing, and form completion. A clear plan helps you stay on track and avoid last-minute stress.
